Why distance drops with age
The averages fall gently until the 40s and then more quickly: for men, from 230 yards in their 40s to 219 in their 50s, 206 in their 60s and 190 in their 70s. Muscle power fades faster than strength with age, and a stiffer turn through the hips and mid-back shortens the backswing.
Some of that is reversible. In a small 2007 trial, golfers averaging 70 years old raised their driver club head speed by about 5% after eight weeks of flexibility, core, balance and strength work.
